Project Overview

Inspired Excellence (IE Systems) was selected to deliver a comprehensive broadcast infrastructure upgrade for Virginia Tech, transforming their production capabilities to support high-performance, multi-camera live sports and media production.

This project involved the design support, installation, and integration of two fully modernized Production Control Rooms (PCRs) and two Audio Control Rooms (ACRs), creating a scalable, future-ready broadcast environment capable of handling complex live productions at the highest level.

Scope of Work

IE Systems deployed a specialized team consisting of one Lead Technician and four Senior Technicians to execute a highly technical, multi-system integration.

Broadcast Core & Signal Infrastructure

At the heart of the system was a robust, enterprise-grade signal backbone:

• High-capacity Evertz EQX router supporting 400+ I/O paths for flexible signal routing
• Fully redundant reference and sync systems ensuring timing accuracy across all devices
• Extensive distribution architecture supporting video, audio, and control signals

This backbone enabled seamless signal flow across all production environments, ensuring reliability and scalability.

Production Control & Switching

Two state-of-the-art PCRs were built to support advanced live production workflows:

• Dual Ross production switchers for high-end video switching
• Integrated Ross XPression and ChyronHego systems for real-time graphics and sports effects
• Comprehensive tally and control systems for coordinated production execution

Camera & Monitoring Systems

The system supported a large-scale camera ecosystem and monitoring environment:

• Full integration of 14 broadcast camera chains with dedicated control units
• Additional POV camera systems for enhanced production flexibility
• Extensive multiview infrastructure with distributed displays across control rooms and racks

Operators were provided with complete visibility and control across all sources, enabling efficient, high-quality production.

Audio, Intercom & Replay Systems

IE Systems implemented a fully integrated audio and communications environment:

• Dual Yamaha CL5 audio consoles for professional-grade mixing
• Riedel intercom matrix enabling seamless crew communication
• Advanced replay and recording systems for live and post-production workflows

Control, KVM & Systems Integration

The installation included:

• Distributed KVM systems for centralized control
• Frame synchronization, audio routing, and playout systems
• Fully integrated rack builds with clean cable management and labeling standards

Execution & Challenges

This project required coordination across multiple disciplines, tight installation timelines, and the integration of a large volume of high-end broadcast equipment into a cohesive, fully operational system.

Typical challenges included:
